Sick snail from Petco?

I just got home a few hours ago with a new black mysery snail from Petco. I'm a little concerned because at the store, all the snails were inside their shells. There was not one moving around. I got one anyway just in case. When I got home I put him in the tank and he didn't move, just stayed in the same spot. Now, he is very tightly inside the shell, probably about half way back. He still hasn't moved any except for retreating further into his shell. Is this normal or do you think I should be concerned? I am still within my warranty period just in case.

I'd give him some time. If he is not out and about by tomorrow, you may well have a sick snail.

How does the flesh around his "trap door" look? Most snails have a nice opaque color (beige or gray). FWIW, only buy snails that are active in their environment...it's not a good sign when none of the snails you observed were active.

I can't really see much of the flesh around his trapdoor actually. As for buying active snails, I agree, however the store I usually bought them from has gone out of business and I've been having trouble finding them so I got desperate actually.

Just a suggestion...there are of ton of members who would probably be more than happy to provide you with snails. Try posting in the Barter/Trade and/or classifieds.

That is a good idea, but why is it that sometimes I can't find this forum? It's like it disappears on me. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough. Could anyone post a link for me or tell me where to look? Thanks.

Sadly, I think this snail is going back to Petco today. He has not been responsive or moved any since I got him.

Sorry fishfairy, I didn't notice it prior to now. The Classifieds and Barter/Trade forums require a 50 post minimum to participate.
