What happened to my crab?!

I woke up this morning to discover my crab died. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me because I was seeing 2 crabs. Turns out he was out of his shell and very much dead.
What happened?

crabs sometimes shed there hard exterior shell so they can grow he might have had problems but he may not be dead at all

I assumed he was dead because he was/is lifeless and I gently poked him to see if he would move.. And nothing. I will keep an eye on him to see if he has a miraculous resurrection! I'm assuming he had molting issues poor guy. We've only had him a week and really like him.
