Why is fish food coming out of my fish's gills?!?!?

This is really freaking me out. Maybe it's just the food? I fed my green terror cichlid sticks for the first time today and it came out of his gills in little pieces and I'm really freaked out

Lol. That's just how they eat. They'll eat sand and it'll come out that way. They're fine!!! My GT do it

But that's so weird and gross and argh! I'm just gonna have to feed him and quickly walk away. I don't know if I can get used to it. He never does it with flake food!

I had the same shock when I first fed my German blue rams yesterday! It's very strange to watch!

Try breaking the sticks up into smaller pieces first if you can.
