crab identification...

The crabs in question have brown and white striped legs. The largest one is about the size of a golfball (beautiful coraline encrusted shell).

Any info on these guys would be much appreciated

cheers
nick

Tried to snap a pic of them but the batteries are dead!

many apologies

I have noticed no snails in the tank (purchased an established tank) -- could these crabs be the reason why?

Is this your hermit crab? If so, he's a killer. I had one and he ate many snails. When he wasn't eating the snails I enjoyed watching him. He was very active.... running from one end of the tank to the other.

If this is a hitchhiker crab, it sounds like a xanthid crab and they will eat snails. Another way to identify this crab is that it will have black claw tips. Perhaps when you get some batteries, you can post a pic for conformation.
