Is this diatoms?

Hermit crabs and mass around snails turn the sand over constantly. Cut back your light a couple of hours also.

My turbo snail absolutely loves the stuff. It will cover the rock and stuff and overnight he scrubs it clean. (y)
So far between him and the hermits, diatoms and any cyano have been kept in check fairly well.
 
If they are not effected by lights then how come it goes away when the lights are off and comes back when they come on?

after some further reading it appears I am incorrect, they do derive nutrition from photosynthesis.
guess that is what I get for mindlessly parroting info read in other posts...
shame on me, I know better than that.:(
 
That's alright it happens. They are driving me nuts it makes the tank look ugly
