Took awile for me to see them, the red circle really blends in. Yes, from these pics they look like yellow ball sponges.

They are niether good or bad really. They are just.. there. I suppose if I had to go one way or the other, I'd say good. I believe it was J. Sprung I heard say that sponges help in removal of nitrates from your system. Ball sponges are neat and I'm always happy to see them in my tank.

Yes, as I understand it from listening to Julian Sprung, they actually will help in reducing your nitrates.
