Is the tank a new set up? If so, could be diatoms. If not, then probably cyano - which is caused from excess nutrients. How much do you feed and how often? What size tank and what in it? You shouldn't have left over food sitting on your rocks, only feed very small amounts. How much flow is in the tank? You should have enough flow for any uneaten food to stay in the water column and get collected by a filter/sump intake/skimmer?

Hi the tank is "new to us" it was an established tank before we got it second hand but the people we got it from (for free) weren't having any luck with it so we are trying to figure out where they went wrong and yes I'm guilty for over feeding I suppose. Can I use a gentle tooth brush and wash it and do a water change? (I'm going to make a better schedular and amount for them I don't like how dirty some parts look) is the nice red stuff covering most of the rock ok? It's a pretty almost bright red/maroon colour? We don't have a sump set up yet and the flow of the tank seems good are levelled are always good except the ph was a little high but still in the safe range

If the red 'stuff' blows off, it is cyano and not a good thing. It indicated a nutrient issue int he water column. This can come from overfeeding as well as disturbing the sandbed, aka moving a tank from point a to point b. Brush and siphon it out during your weekly water change, make sure you use ro/di (or di at worst) for top off and water changes, and minimize feedings (2-3 times a week). It will take time, but it will eventually solve the issue.
