What is this spongy cocoon on rock??

Help, I picked up this piece of rock and found this spongy textured, cocoon looking thing growing beneath it. Does anyone know what it is??? Thanks!

Looks like a sponge.

Yea, it's a sponge. Sometimes they can get out of hand, almost like a weed. If they start to over-multiply, they can be pulled off the LR easily enough.

Ah yes.... Q-Tip sponges. I have dozens of them on a single piece of 6 lbs LR. Indeed, if you think you too many, just pulled them off as was mentionned above.
