As an update, I had to change my fish. The Dwarf Puffers never settled in and... well.... you know the rest.
So I switched to a platy trio and a guppy to go with red and blue shrimp

if your worried about breaking your heater get a piece of pvc cut to size with the diameter a 1/2 inch bigger drill holes through out the pvc so water can flow freely
or you can make a cage out of light defuser , 2 simple ways to protect the heater,
