calling all moving bed media experts please

I'm somewhat new to fish keeping. I have a 50 gallon tank that's been set up for about 2 months with about 10 fish in it. I was interested in making a moving bed filter because it just looks cool and it serves a excellent purpose. Now I was unable to get my hands on k1 micro or anything like it so I got this fluval 170g media from my local pet store. I know it's not technically a moving bed media now but I still would like to know if it's serving a purpose in my tank or is it just wasting space.

It's increasing the surface area for benefitial bacteria to grow so I think it should help, but for an aquarium that big and specially depending on your stock you might need something that pushes more water around.
