Coldwater to tropical ?

I have some temperate fish in my tank which is currently 17 degrees, is it possible to put a heater in and slowly turn it into a tropical tank? Or will this be bad for the fish?

Well, the problem is, the added heat will speed up the temperate fish's life spans, because it speeds up their metabolism. I'd have to say no, and if I were you, I'd just buy a new tank.
