diy bio-balls

Does anyone think plastic bottle caps would work. I have seen guys fuse the together and drill holes in them.... but I am far to lazy to spend that much time on that. And I don't think it adds any surface area to them then they already have.

That sounds like too much work. Depending on the size of the filter or sump, I have seen unused plastic pot scrubbers used for bio filtration and degassing.

While the plastic caps would work, and drilling them would increase available surface, they still don't provide a very large surface for the volume thy take up; neither do bio balls. Plastic pot scrubbers, for example, provide more surface area per volume than bio balls.
