All I used was...
A drill and bits (already owned)
A 3$ canister from walmart
Some of that threaded plumbers tape 2$
5/8 inch clear tubing from the plumbing section 10$ (have extra for other projects)
Two 3/4 pvc caps about 1$
One stick of 3/ PVC 3$
A "Build your own fountain" Kit from lowes 20$ (The filter was rated about 60 gph)
One tube of silicone 5$
And of course, filter media I already had laying around.

I'll swap to my phone and see if I can upload pictures.

A view of the canister, I intend to get some lava rock and have less filter floss

The PVC spraybar.

The tank right as I got it running. Note, its rather powerful. The end has a sponge for it, I am just waiting for the silicone to dry before its attached!

Forget the lava rock as it is not porous at all. You want your water to go through your media, never around it. Just fill that filters with simple plastic pot scrubbies for 10 times the surface area. Clean about once every 4+ months or so.
