We absolutely love our 10 gallon nano, and want a display refugium with mangroves more for additional filtration than for food growth. So here is our idea, side by side 10 gallon reef and 5 gallon (or another 10 gallon) tanks. Since the plumbing for overflow and return would be a bit gawdy on this small of a setup, we were thinking of sticking with the AC50 currently on the 10, and adding a powerhead to the second tank. Now the tricky part, getting flow between the 2 tanks. By using a backup 10 gallon (well, this one would end up being the reef), we would drill the side of the display tank and the refugium, and connect the 2 with PVC. The hole would be large enough for fish to transfer from one tank to the other, and we believe that we would end up with a very well filtered pair of tanks. Tell me what you all think. BTW, the AC50 is filled with chaeto and live rock rubble for filtration, and the reef is constructed of about 22 lbs of live rock. The mangroves would be for phosphate/nitrate filtration.
