Manzanita wood prep

A friend and I recently obtained manzanita wood, mostly fresh off the bush. What can I do to make it safe for my tanks?? Thanks!

I looked into this quite a bit and apparently it can't be fresh, it must be dead and dried for a long time.

People also remove the bark and soak it to release tannins.
