I want to protect the glass from heavy rocks by distributing their weight evenly across the glass. I'm planning to have several heavy, not pointy sharp but not round and smooth either, rocks on one side of a 40g tank. I've read of eggcrate from lighting, but are there any other materials I could use? Stuff from around the house?

You can use styro foam. If you are using gravel, there is always the risk, however minimal of creating a pointload, which can break the bottom. A friend lost 2 tanks to this, and switched to using styro beneath his rocks.

Freshwater or Saltwater set up?
For SW most just put it on the glass and cover the bottom with sand. Some make a pvc frame to rest the rock on.
