PVC Loop with multiple pumps?

I see many people tossing away the smaller air pumps. I was wondering if the proper air supply could be a achieved by using smaller pumps combined instead of a larger more expensive pump. They power draw should be about the same, though using up more outlets. What do the season veterans say, am I way off? I though it would be a good way to recycle these pumps that are laying around.
