Decorating my 10 gallon tank

I have just set up a new 10 gallon fish tank and wanted to go with a more natural aquascape with stuff I can find in a river near my house.

I wanted to use rocks, wood, and sand. I know how to clean of the rocks and sand but I'm not sure how to safely clean out the wood as it will most likely have lots of holes and I don't think you can bake wood. If anybody knows how than I would greatly appreciate the help.

boil it and soak it. boiling it kills bacteria and soaking it helps it sink in the tank.

How do you go about soaking it? Just let it sit in a tote of water until it sinks? I've been wanting to add wood to my aquarium but always been to scared to add nasties to my tank! Thanks
