Sorry. Haha. Glad I happened on this thread. I am planning to put sand in my 60 gallon when I set it up.

I put sponges over my intakes. No issues with sand in my filters. I just rinse off the sponge once a week or as needed.
Try Java Fern as a super easy plant. Tie it to a rock or piece of driftwood. Set under the brightest area of the tank. Leave it alone. Should grow.
