Free tank!

My uncles getting rid of his 55 gallon tank and he said he'll give it to me for free! It comes with a heater filter and a lot of decor! I'm not sure what I should stock it with yet....

I wish I could get a free tank. I just bought a 60 a few weeks ago.

I buy Black Diamond blasting sand which is super cheap. Or check CL for used gravel. Or go to a rock yard.

I use Black Diamond as well and love it. You can buy 50lbs at Tractor Supply for around $8

Where would I find the sand? And would it work well with goldfish or plecos?

It's a pain to rinse and rinse and rinse. I put a sponge over my filter intake also to keep any particles out and to help clean up remnants. But once it clears its very nice.

I put down a layer of root tabs first and my plants grow well.

I read if I keep the tube 1 inch above the sand it will get the poop.

Do not get intake too close to sand, sand kills filters. If you gravel vac above the sand and swirl you can get detritus out. My plants use most fish poop.

I think he is meaning the sand will suck up into the filter and cause issues.
