Scenario:

I am up to something here...
I pick up one of those San Francisco Bay brine shrimp egg mix, throw it in water and put in a sealed container outside, full sun. One and a half week later, the water is a glowing green (algae) and there are tons of tinny brine shrimp swimming around...
They've never been fed anything so I am assuming they are feeding on the algae. Nothing has gone into the jar, nothing has come out of the jar.

The ecosphere is a more controlled environment--a certain amount of shrimp, a certain amount of algae, etc. I vote for a short time before it collapses. However, by changing the aspects of the jar, such as population, light exposure, etc. you may find a combination that works for a longer period.
