I just bought a 55 gallon tank and would like some advice on a hood. I am clueless on the different types of bulbs and hoods that can be used. I want to add some medium light plants such as amazon swords, etc. and was wondering what type of hood/lighting I could do. I was looking at the T5 lighting fixtures that sit high on the tank, do those need a hood cover or can it be open? What lighting could I do that can be used without the need for CO2 and won't cause too much algae in the tank? I am looking to add soil on the bottom of the tank with sand covering that. Thank you!

I have a Coralife T5HO-2 bulb light fixture on a 55 dirted tank and have been able to grow swords, crypts, green and narrow leaf temple plant, val, dwarf sag, ambulia, madagascar lace plant, java fern, java moss, and anubia's, oh and dwarf chain swords. I have an open top tank and don't have CO2 (I use glutaraldehyde, the same ingredient as Excel, which is a liquid carbon).
