I have a barrel in the backyard for goldfish. My mom thought it would be nice to add some lillies and so she bought some, which are in pretty poor shape. Some of the leaves have holes in them and are starting to wither away. Should I trim them off at the leaf, leaving the stem? Any advice would be appreciated.

I would trim the entire stem since it will not put out new leaves. I would love to see some flower pics when it gets going :)

I know the leaves are supposed to be at the surface of the water. Should I raise up the plant or just leave it on the bottom of the barrel?

Leave them at the bottom, the plant will send up new leaves as needed, and melt off the old leaves that no longer do what it wants them to do.
