I've been battling a Algae bloom for ALONG time now. (Bout a month) I've desided to try a blackout. How long do I need to cover it and will my fish be ok without food for that time.

I have used the blackout method in my planted tanks and the plants don't like it, but the bounce right back - my crypts don't even melt!

3-4 days is ideal - and that means full, total, complete blackout - no peeking, no feeding, no light at all.

After that, you will need to alter something in the way you feed, light or change the water, or your problem will return promptly.

I've done a small blackout with some Accu-Clear and a large water change, its much better now and is incredibly clear. I'm defenity going to vacum under the Pleco's cave more. (Tons of crap)

All the fish seem much more active. The Cory has been gulping air which I think is a good sign. (you know rushing up to the surface to get a mouthfull of air)
