I noticed that there is a build up of algae on one of my plants. Is it harmful to
The plant? And if so how should
I get rid of it? Just run my fingers along the leaf and scrape It off??

Okay, either A) purchase an algae eater or B) use your fingers to rub the algae off, don't scrape it though. (use the money hand signal, just in case you don't get the instructions) rub it with your thumb on the top of the leaf and your finger on the bottom ^^

Well, that's pretty much all you have to do really

The first thing is to determine what type of Algae. Brown (diatoms), Hair, Blue Green ... etc. Just scraping it off will not solve the underlying issue and you don't want to have to continually scrape algae off every couple of weeks.
