Just wondering if an individual stem will branch on its own or if I have to clip it at a node before it will branch out.

It should grow if you just plants the stem

I've never had alternanthera reineckii branch without first being trimmed. Some stems certainly will, but not this one IME.

It can if it starts growing laterally like along the surface. Likewise I keep a lot of it emersed and it doesn't tend to branch until it gets too heavy to support itself and is laying relatively flat instead of straight up.

Perfect. Once it roots firmly I'll clip it at the first node and go from there.
