Black Stringy Algae on grass

So in our community tank we have long blade grass...no idea what it is called. Well some is the tips have turned black and has a fuzzy/stringy algae on it.

It looks ugly and is seeming to harm the grass, any ideas what it could be by the pic below?

That looks kind of like a thread algae. The plant looks like a Val so don't use Excel or it could melt it. How long do you leave lights on? When you have algae issues you should only run your lights 6 hours max daily. Also what are your nitrate readings at?
