Does anybody have a recommendation for a cost-effective CO2 system for a 55 gallon aquarium? I've never used CO2 on a tank this big before and am
unfamiliar with what exactly it needs to to be effective.

You'll want atleast a 5lb bottle and a good regulator. A lot of people here use aquatek regulators or if your cashed up u can get a GLA (green leaf aquariums) regulator.

For a tank your size I'd recommend a co2 reactor rather than a diffuser as you'll use a lot less co2 with a reactor than a diffuser. (No wastage)

Cerges reactor - https://glassboxgardeners.com/threads/how-to-build-a-cerges-co2-reactor.346/

Griggs reactor - https://rotalabutterfly.com/rex-grigg/diy-reactor.htm

Should get u started :)
