My father in law ran his tank for 10 years, and he gave it to me about 2 years ago. Fish have come and died, the tank has been completely made over again and again, but one thing has been the same--the java fern. This stuff cannot die; it's only weakness is it must stay wet. It's currently in a 10 gallon tank, with very soft, acidic water and little light, and it's thriving. I don't feed it or pay any attention to it, besides the monthly pruning. Soon, if you adequetely ignore your little java fern, it will grow into a huge choking mess. Just make sure it has a bit of rock or driftwood to grow on--don't try to bury the roots, just anchor it onto the rock or wood and the roots will get a grasp.
