How do I propitiate aquatic plants?

I want to aquascape my 10 gallon guppy tank but don't want to spend a lot of money on plants so is there a specific way I should go about propagating the plants?

Should be fine to just cut the top off and replant it and the old ones will sprout new stems plus your top one will continue to grow
