Not that I've had THAT many Java Ferns, but I've never seen one do this. Is it fairly common?

It looks like a deformed leaf. I had a narrow leaf java grow a leaf that was forked (like a snake tongue) at the end. From what I know the leaf could have been damaged during early growth and grew that way.
 
It doesn't look deformed in that sense. I looked closer at it today and two of the other plants from that bunch have a second fork, but not a third.

This one looks really symmetrical and looks like the plant is supposed to be that way.
