Really need more information. Do you mean in the center of the plant? Or some of the leaves are black in the center? Java fern will turn dark and sprout roots from mature leaves as it sprouts "babys".

A photo would really help.

If your brown/black "leaves" resemble a little spider, they will start shooting off sprouts soon. I have a java fern attached to driftwood, and almost all of the adult leaves have little clusters of brown/black "spiders" on the underside of the their tips that are shooting out baby java fern leaves.

Jave fern picture

Folks,
Attached is a picture of my java fern that has been with me for about 3 months--of which only 5 days with CO2 and ferts. It has been in this poor condition since about a week after I bought it--it underwent a few tank water gyrations as I was learning. (its been through hell!)
I also see small holes in the leaves. Maybe time to remove and start over? I had it held down with sewing tread for a month to get it to mount to driftwood.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Small holes is generally a sign of Potassium Deficiency. If you just recently got your CO2 and ferts in line, it may still be recovering and just now showing the signs of past poor treatment. It general takes at least 2-3 weeks before you see signs of a deficiency or recovery from a deficiency. If it's been more than 3 weeks since you started the dry ferts, you'll probably need to increase your potassium dosing.

Purrbox,
thanks--I need to give it a few more weeks then. Im hoping they will mend--they attached nicely to the driftwood when tied down. I took the thread off a week ago. Does potassium def also create black leaves?

You should go ahead a snip out those "burned" leaves cliff. They won't recover but will sprout babies as they deteriorate. I find java fern to be extremely intolerant of leaving the water and every time I remove it to trim I get similar damage. I've resorted to only trimming in in the tank.
