Are lead plant weights really made out of lead or out of a simliar, nontoxic material? Are lead weights safe for the fish, and if so, could you use larger lead weights for driftwood, etc? Thanks! :p

almost all the plants at my local fish stores have the leadweights holding the roots together so it must be safe. they have some random fish swimming around in the tank and they all seem healthy.

They aren't lead. They are a different metal that's bendable and safe for the fish tank. :)

EDIT:
Some are lead, others aren't. You shouldn't use the ones that say they are lead.

EDIT:
Here's what it says at where I got my plants....
Banded with non-toxic lead bands, unless otherwise noted. Non-toxic metal band actually made of a magnesium/zinc mix safe for all aquaria.

You probably won't find lead weights much in the USA. For one, zinc alloys are cheaper than lead. :)
