ok i picked up a 5 gallon tank to use as a growout tank for my baby apistos. i picked up just a cheap hood that tankes a screw in bulb, i did not at the time pick up a incandecent bulb.

now i have u-shaped CF 20 watt bulbs i could screw one of these into the hood. but.. since that tank is bare-bottom (no substrate0 i just want to put a piece of driftwood in the tank with some jave fern/moss on it. would a standard "aquarium" incandecent bulb be ok? the CF seams like orverkill as i have not intention of dosing ferts or CO2.

Incadescent fixtures are much better at heating a tank than lighting it. While you may be able to grow plants with an incadescent bulb, it probably won't work well. You could pick up a 10watt CF instead which wouldn't be quite so overkill and would probably just be low light due to the size of the tank and restrike.
