lighting help

i was just wondering i always see pics. of peoples planted tanks with the lights suspended above the water, what dose this do and should i do it

It's not completely necessary, it depends on many factors. Those factors are PAR, wattage, what kind of light, and tank depth. There is a chart I will try to find for you that tells how high your lights should be.
