So for a gift I got an Aquafarm. Don't worry, it days self cleaning but I will be changing the water. Here are some pics. So far the seeds are sprouting. For those who have asked me about it I will use this thread to give updates.

Here's my update in case anyone is reading along. As you can see the light is very low. I have an idea for using an old desk lamp though.

It's 3 gallons. There is a small pump that pushes water up an unsightly black tube. The tube empties into a tray and that waters the plants and drains back out via a hole in the tray. I can take pics tomorrow if you like. Supposedly this is the second generation of this product.

That's the idea. The company claims you don't change the water just top off. I don't agree with that though. I should do some tests on the water after a week and see where it's at. Maybe also at day 5.

The idea is that the fish waste is the lone provider of ferts. I don't know how one betta (what they recommend) can have enough waste. The seeds are USDA certified organic so they don't contain ferts or insecticides etc. I took a few pics to show up dates. The seeds were soaked overnight on Christmas Eve and planted Christmas Day. Here they are today.

I'm going to try to test ammonia tomorrow or later tonight even. When I take it apart to do that I'll get pics of the inner workings.

It's some kind of porous rock or lufa or something. It holds water. I'll take a closeup for you. It comes with a little bit of gravel for bb and actually comes with a bacteria booster, dechlorinator and sludge buster. It's made by a subsidy of Kordon as in the breather bags.

I wonder if the porous rock could be used for biomedia as well as ceramic rings?

I have no idea. Here are some close ups of it.

You might put a background on one side of the tank, to give your fish some security.

I think in general it's an interesting idea. It's aquaculture in miniature.

But I feel bad for the Betta in such a bare tank. I know you gave him a plant. I hope it grows. And I'm glad it's 3g.

Please test the water and let us know how it's going ?

My last Betta was spoiled.10g rimless

Here's some updates. my little heater arrived today. Even though it's warm in my bedroom where this tank is located I thought I'd bump up the temp since bettas like warmer water. I put a flower pot cave in and a thermometer also. I left my test kit two floors down so shortly I will go get that and run tests. I'm interested to see how the plants do with warmer water too. I think they will grow even faster. I also got more seeds at my local garden center. Organic of course. They are for the cats really.
