Going to start a new 50g tank. Thoughts on using playground sand instead of gravel? Can you have live plants in the sand?

I think u can, but I see that root tabs r recommended.

You sure can. I'd recommend pool filter sand over play sand though. The grading and makeup of play sand can vary wildly.

Recommending root tabs was a good call. PFS + root tabs is a very popular substrate for planted tanks.
