Newbie; 7 Gallon; Looking to add a plant or two

I am a newbie looking to add a plant to my 7-Gallon specifically for the benefit of absorbing toxins and harboring beneficial bacteria.

I need to find a plant that is:
- Easy for beginners
- Will remain small-ish for my small tank

Anyone got a suggestion or two?
