Plants in stocking

A friend and I where trying to find a way to have plants in a tank that would have digging cichlids. The problem with them is they up root plants causing a mess with unlaying soil. So we thought maybe if we took a plant and put the roots in a stocking with dirt they would get the needed nutrients from the soil and the stocking would also anchor the plants better. Would this work? I added a picture below.

You could also bury a cup or pot with the dirt in it and top with gravel.
 
Give it a try with plant and let us know if it works! Be sure to leave enough room for root growth...seems like it should work.
