Preferred Substrate

So, this is just something that I've been wondering about there lately. I have 2 tanks with Miracle-Gro Organic Potting Soil; one high-tech and the other Diana Walstad method. My other tanks are just plain ole inert gravel.

So what is your favorite substrate?

Depends. For planted tanks, I like MGOC with black floramax on top. For non planted tanks... well... nevermind, I don't like non planted tanks.

Yes, I've just been wishing I set up my 55g with dirt. I probably would have 2x faster growth.

Yeah, but you'd also probably have 2x more algae too.

Yes, I guess you are right. I would rather have slow/moderate growth and minimal algae as opposed to fast plant growth and algae soup.
