Generally it isn't necessary for Java ferns they get most of their nutrients from the water column. Just make sure that the rhizome isn't buried under the substrate and you'll be golden!

The java also has some bba growing on it, could that be from lack if nutrients and to much light? I have a small sword in there as well, no algae on that, has root tab though..

Leds usually aren't good for plants unless you get them specifically made for that purpose, and yes the bba can be from a lack of nutrients. I would use flourish comp, and api leaf zone.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try the additives, as much as I like the LEDs they may have to go, no issues with any if my cfl tanks.
