Hey guys i've been keeping tropial fish for several years now and over the last few weeks a slimy clear algee has been covering my plants and causing them to rot any idea why this is happening or how i can stop it ?

I would wager that it is BGA (blue green algae) which is not algae at all, but cyanobacteria. I had a bout with it about 2 months ago. Here is the thread I posted on the subject that might give you some info on combating it.

Here is a good article on the subject.

BTW, since treating for it, I have not seen 1 spec of it return -- so you can get rid of it.
