My wife has a vase with Syngonium podophyllum: http://www.plantoasis.com/plants/1001_1020/1004_arrowhead_vine.htm and Epipremnum aureum: http://www.plantoasis.com/plants/1001_1020/1002_pothos.htm trimmings and a massive root ball. I think these are about the most common house plants out there.

So, I am thinking about throwing a creature or two in there. I seem to remember seeing a lot of these types of setups on office desks with betas in them a year or two back. I am wondering if anyone here has done this. I am hoping these plants don't make toxic water, etc... Was thinking of adding a couple cherry or ghost shrimp... but am open to other ideas / thoughts.

Is this on topic? Apologies if I have the wrong forum for this type of discussion...

Shrimp want some pretty clean water and some circulation. I don't think they would last very long. As for toher fish, I don't know if anything wuld be happy in there unless it is a lot larger than it looks. You could find a larger vase or use a small aquarium for the same purpose and things might work well for them. From the pictures it looks aweful small for any fish with that many roots and no swimming room. Maybe a ramshorn or two but not much more.

Yeah I think snails would enjoy it, but that's about it. I can't imagine shrimp would survive as the water quality and oxygen levels are probably pretty low (stagnant). Some common pond snails, or possibly MTS would most likely enjoy this setup as they can always come to the surface for air, and are small enough to navigate through the root ball.
