String algae problem

I'm having some trouble with string algae in my 55 gal planted freshwater tank. I suspect that my lighting is insufficient to promote vigorous plant growth that would inhibit the algae's growth . I am also forced to us one residential fluorescent light bulb with my power glo bulb. I think a new lighting system might fix the problem. Until then I would like some suggestions on controlling it.
