If it's just floramax then siphon all of the water out, add fresh water, let it settle, and siphon all the small particulate. You can also put some filter floss on the intake tube of the filter and it will catch a lot of the debris. Seachem Clarity works pretty good in this kind of situation.

I just leave my gravel alone, and let the plants/bacteria deal with it. It's been like that for 6 months, and nobody has died, so I guess it works.

Floramax needs to be pre-rinsed (unlike eco complete) and it comes with a packet of bio-magnet clarifying solution. Just curious, did you use it?
