I'm looking to put a few plants in my tank and was wondering what kind of substrate to use. Could I get away with using a deep bed of rocks, or do I have to mix different size stones?

You can grow plants in almost any substrate. There are substrates with plant nutrients in them like Eco Complete, or you could go as simple as pool filter sand. It may be hard to keep plants down in bigger gravel substrates, and with smaller substrates such as sand, you want to have it stirred up occasionally to prevent the trapping of gas.
