type of filter material

White, green, black I am not sure which one is better. Will a small stainless Steel wire mesh a better filter material?

What do you mean? What type of filter is this? You need mechanical filtration (poly floss, sponge, etc.), and biological filtration (BioMax, like ceramic rings, bio balls, etc.) or if this is a HOB filter that only takes the little cartridges, what type of filter is it? Sorry if that was a little confusing lol.

Surface area. Foams and porous products will hold more beneficial bacteria than metal. What type of filter you using?

Yes. you need a lot of surface area on the media so it can get lots of BB on it. the metal will not have that, especially in a mesh form.
