im thinking about doing pressurized co2, but it seems a little expensive. wouldnt it be like.. the co2 tank itself, some valve and like a bubble counter?

Yes, Co2 tank (5-20lb, with 10 paying for itself over time, less fills, less then double the price to get a fill over a 5lb. 5lb here is 10$, 10lb is 15$)
and a Regulator/solenoid setup.

Total minumum price is about 100$ plus the cost of the tank. Fire control places often have 10's used that they will part with cheaper.

Yeah, I'd say budget $150 for the CO2 tank, a good regulator with a needle valve, and some CO2 grade airline.

Still need to diffuse it into the tank water though. You can DIY a lot of things cheaply, or pay up to $60 for a pre-fab reactor/diffuser.
