Water sprite can grow planted, floated, and if planted and left to grow can grow up and out of the tank. I have never had an issue of my planted water sprite releasing little pieces unless a fish nipped them off.
The aeriel roots are common on many aquarium plants including water sprite but none of my water sprite has ever released them without help from fish. I keep water sprite in the 2 goldie tanks as it grows so fast and can withstand their picking at it. I always have little pieces floating from them nipping at the leaves. On a plus note tho you can leave the pieces floating and they will grow into nice looking floating plants. Just leave the other one planted.
