wondering what size tank i should use for my first truely planted tank. i have a number of tanks all with fish that are unsuitable for a true planted tank. i would like to know what size tank should i venture into planted low tech low to medium lighting tanks with. also does anyone make their own root tabs they would be willing to sell?

I like using a 20g long because of the foot print (30"x12") and height (12"). 30" fixtures are not that expensive and being shallow, you get the most out of your light. And the volume is near the upper effective end of using DIY CO2.

I agree with the 20L. Great footprint, easy to light since it's so shallow. I make root tabs. Root Tabs

30 long could also work if you want a bigger size.
